Jack White and Tom Jones go blue

Last week, my friend Jason Schneider went to Nashville for the launch of Jack White’s solo album Blunderbuss, and the three year anniversary party for Jack’s label, Third Man Records. His review of the show is on exclaim.ca.

For the first set of the evening, with his all-girl band, White wore a powder blue western suit. I’ve seen him wear quite a few western-styled suits, like Manuel’s embroidered “bones” and this one, probably also Manuel, when he and Loretta Lynn won album of the year in 2004 for their most excellent collaboration Van Lear Rose.

Since then, Jack’s also recorded a Third Man release with Rockabilly Queen Wanda Jackson, including a cover of Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good”.

I saw that Jack’s latest collaboration with a legendary artist was just out on a Blue Series 7″, so I asked Jason to get one for me from the Third Man store.

I am a Tom Jones fan. (I mean, like, who isn’t?)  For the single, he and producer White did hot and blue versions of Willie Dixon’s “Evil” and Wayne Shanklin’s “Jezebel”. Here’s a short sample of “Evil” . On the cover, photographer Jo McCaughey does more great work in front of the blue wall in the Third Man studio.

Wanda Jackson: You Know I’m No Good

2 08 2011

Last Wednesday, I  saw Wanda Jackson, Queen of Rockabilly, play a show in New York’s Central Park.

She was fantastic. It was too dark to get good pictures with my little camera.

It was a stirring moment when she did Amy Winehouse’s You Know I’m No Good.

Alt-country night brings steel guitars and snap shirts to the UW grad house. Maybe I’ll apply to do my PhD in westernwear so I can get in for free next time.

a night of country music splendour

Tonight, at the Dakota Tavern in Toronto:

“The Haunted Hillbilly” is a fantastical fictionalized story about Nudie, Nudie suits, Hank Williams, and the underside of fifties country music. The Hootenanny is to help fund the stage version, coming to Toronto later this summer. One of the auction offerings is a custom made Golden West Nudie Jacket or shirt, generously donated by a couple of country-music loving Nudie admirers.
