Last week, my friend Jason Schneider went to Nashville for the launch of Jack White’s solo album Blunderbuss, and the three year anniversary party for Jack’s label, Third Man Records. His review of the show is on exclaim.ca.
For the first set of the evening, with his all-girl band, White wore a powder blue western suit. I’ve seen him wear quite a few western-styled suits, like Manuel’s embroidered “bones” and this one, probably also Manuel, when he and Loretta Lynn won album of the year in 2004 for their most excellent collaboration Van Lear Rose.
Since then, Jack’s also recorded a Third Man release with Rockabilly Queen Wanda Jackson, including a cover of Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good”.
I saw that Jack’s latest collaboration with a legendary artist was just out on a Blue Series 7″, so I asked Jason to get one for me from the Third Man store.
I am a Tom Jones fan. (I mean, like, who isn’t?) For the single, he and producer White did hot and blue versions of Willie Dixon’s “Evil” and Wayne Shanklin’s “Jezebel”. Here’s a short sample of “Evil” . On the cover, photographer Jo McCaughey does more great work in front of the blue wall in the Third Man studio.
